Lucena City, Philippines – The Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Lucena (DLL) Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) Program took a significant step towards shaping the next generation of compassionate professionals by hosting a compelling seminar,
"Building a Strong Foundation: Exploring the Core Programs of Social Welfare Agencies."
The event, held at the DLL Audio-Visual Room in Brgy. Isabang, served as a dynamic platform for first-year BSSW students to delve into the intricate workings of social welfare agencies and understand their pivotal role in community development.
More than a mere academic exercise, this seminar was meticulously designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical realities of social work. It provided a crucial opportunity for students to grasp the nuances of various social welfare initiatives, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the field. The enthusiastic participation of approximately 150 freshmen students underscored the program's relevance and its ability to captivate the minds of aspiring social workers.
A particularly impactful segment of the seminar was the presentation by Mr. Raymund R. Villalon, Program Officer of Tanggol Kalikasan (TK). His discourse went beyond the conventional boundaries of social work, illuminating the inextricable link between environmental stewardship and social justice. Mr. Villalon eloquently articulated TK’s vision and mission, showcasing the organization's relentless efforts in environmental advocacy. He emphasized the critical role of social workers in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, deforestation, unsustainable waste management, and water conservation.
Mr. Villalon's presentation resonated deeply with the students, inspiring them to become proactive champions of both environmental and social justice. He challenged them to consider how social work principles could be applied to mitigate the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on vulnerable communities. This exposure to the intersectionality of social and environmental issues broadened the students' perspectives, equipping them with a holistic understanding of their future roles.
The seminar's success extended beyond the dissemination of knowledge. It fostered a profound sense of responsibility and commitment to community development among the students. By emphasizing the vital role of social workers in building a more just and sustainable society, the event ignited a passion for service and a dedication to making a tangible difference.
