LUCENA CITY — Students of Sacred Heart College (SHC) gathered on October 25 for a symposium organized by the Youth for Environment Society (YES) and JSWAP–SHC to express their opposition to the proposed 247MW wind power project on Mt. Banahaw.

With the theme “Cordian Care for Creation: A Call to Save Mt. Banahaw,” the event highlighted concerns about the project’s possible effects on the mountain’s ecology, watershed, cultural heritage, and spiritual importance.

SHC President Sr. Elenita E. Soriano, DC urged students to protect Banahaw, calling it both a sacred place and an important ecosystem. Speakers including Dr. Maria Lucila Baroro, Atty. Psyche Tolentino, and representatives from Tanggol Kalikasan explained the environmental risks of constructing wind turbines in the area.

Workshops led by Tanggol Kalikasan encouraged students to reflect on the state of Banahaw and how they can help protect it. SHC alumna Kim Cabutihan from JUAN BANAHAW also inspired students to take action.

Atty. Mark Martinez presented the legal basis for the petition, citing the constitutional right to a balanced and healthful ecology and the principle of intergenerational equity.

At the end of the event, students signed a petition against the project and placed painted handprints on fabric as a symbol of their commitment to protect Mt. Banahaw.
